Surface Design Show :

Our first year at this interesting show that targets the world of architecture and interior design. But it was immensely interesting. In fact, I’d say that the show organisers are missing a big trick in not pushing themselves to the agency world to drive inspiration in material use and provoking debate around experiential stand design. It would certainly drive some innovation in this space, where for the large part, companies use wood and containers, and there is little of late, in between.

Highlights of the show included real wood veneer, printed in simply stunning colour and detail, back lit, laser cut Corian and, the incredible LED Light Sheet from Applelec which will be set to change the face of both the retail space and also push the boundaries of interior design. These ultra-slim LED light panels can sit behind any material, from back painted, laser cut glass and mirror, to simple duratrans, or Perspex paneling. Now seen as shelving in Jimmy Choo and Molton Brown stores and backlit splashback paneling in the kitchens of those in the know. It won’t be long before this replaces all backlit surfaces I would have thought. A fraction of the cost, limited heat emission, and so thin it allows for streamlined POSM like never before.

Most stunning use of material, used most creatively was from Portuguese company Burel Factory, whose felt walls and patterning were just to die for. Incredible geometric shapes and dimensions created by hand with faultless finishing.

Show quote of the day ‘Slumped glass. It’s the only thing I’m interested in right now’. Really? It’s not all that as far as I could see…
